A public inspector is a person who has the right to exercise public control in the sphere of environmental protection. Its status and rights are enshrined in law.

The inspector has the right:

• Take part in inspections for compliance with legislation on environmental protection of enterprises and organizations of all forms of ownership. It can do it together with state inspectors or officials persons of other controlling bodies. And also conduct raids and inspections by direction of the Derzhekoinspectorate unit.

• To participate in the preparation of materials on damages for transfer to the court.
• To obtain information about the environmental status and sources of negative impact on it.

The public inspector can become an adult citizen of Ukraine, who has experience of environmental work.

The inspector appoints the head of the state ecoinspection or the head of the relevant regional authority.

To become a inspector it is necessary to apply to the appropriate territorial authority of the State Inspector and a recommendation from the organization or petition of the government inspectors. It will also have to pass an interview on knowledge of environmental legislation.

The certificate is issued to the public inspector for one year. The Inspector report continues its action.
