The situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP is dangerous: Russia continues nuclear terrorism – the consequences may be felt not only in Ukraine, but also beyond

For several months in a row, Russia has been threatening and terrorizing not only Ukraine. An accident at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant can be of such a scale that radiation will not just spread throughout our country, but also reach others – beyond the borders of Ukraine. No one has ever allowed themselves to shell at nuclear power plants before. These facilities, if operation will be disrupted, pose too high a threat to ignore the risks. But unfortunately, Russia has opened Pandora’s box. The whole civilized world must understand the risks
In a speech, President Vololymyr Zelensky said against the background of the events at the ZNPP: “And this is not only an argument for recognizing it (Russia, ed.) as a state sponsor of terrorism, but also an argument in favor of applying tough sanctions against the entire Russian nuclear industry – from “Rosatom” to all related companies and persons”.

Ukraine calls on international organizations to take necessary measures to force Russia to leave the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, as well as to create a demilitarized zone around the ZNPP and hand it over to Ukrainian control.

The “SPKR” and other non-governmental organizations previously sent appeals to international organizations with a call to recognize Russia as a terrorist state and to impose sanctions on “Rosatom” and its related companies. And also to influence Russia to leave the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

What has happened recently at Zaporizhzhya NPP

On August 5, Russian troops shelled the site of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant three times. The high-voltage line of the autotransformer and the nitrogen-oxygen station were damaged. There was a risk of hydrogen leakage and spraying of radioactive substances. This was reported by “Energoatom”.

On August 6, Russian troops again shelled the ZNPP and the city of Energodar. The site in immediate vicinity of dry cask storage was aimed. “Due to enemy rocket attacks, three radiation monitoring sensors around the dry cask storage site were damaged.
So timely detection and response in the event of deterioration of the radiation environment or leakage of radiation from containers of spent nuclear fuel is currently impossible, “Energoatom” reports.

“Energoatom” says that the Russians, who were at the nuclear power plant before the shelling, either left the station or occupied bunker rooms to which the Ukrainian personnel did not have access. The state corporation also reported that two Ukrainian employees of the station were injured. A man was injured by shrapnel during the explosions, a woman was injured during shelling of the coastal zone.
“Energoatom” informed that as of the morning of August 8, the ZNPP was operating with the risk of violating radiation and fire safety standards.

In addition, Ukrainian intelligence reported that Russian troops have mined power units of the Zaporizhzhya NPP. Later, the occupiers themselves did not hide these facts. One of the military commanders of the occupying army was quoted on Russian propaganda resources. He said that they have mined all important objects of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. He added another threat: “there will be either Russian land or a scorched desert.”
